Your water heater should be serviced and cleaned each year for best performance. If your water heater is sooting up the side of your RV, cleaning and adjustments are needed. If your water heater has an anode rod inside, remove it when you winterize. An anode rod will corrode within 5 minutes of being exposed to RV antifreeze.
